First-Party Data in Ireland After the Cookie Crumbles

Third-party cookies have been fading for years, and the practical consequence has arrived: the data you can rely on is the data you collect yourself. First-party data, the interactions on your own site, your CRM, your email list, is now the whole game, and Irish businesses are rebuilding their measurement and marketing around it.

What first-party data actually is

Every interaction a customer has with you, directly: site visits, form fills, purchases, support conversations, and email engagement. It is data you collected with consent and control, stored in your own systems, and it is the only layer that survives the privacy shift intact.

What changed

  • Third-party tracking undercounts more every year, so channels look worse than they are, and budgets get cut on bad data.
  • Consent is the gate. Cookie banners must offer real choice under GDPR, which means analytics runs on opted-in data, and the opted-in data is the truth.
  • AI research sits outside tracking. Customers ask ChatGPT before they visit, a layer classic attribution cannot see, the argument in our attribution guide.

The build order

  1. Fix the measurement foundation. GA4 events that equal money: leads, bookings, purchases, with values, the setup from our attribution guide.
  2. Grow the owned list. Email signups, the four email automation flows, and offers that earn an address honestly.
  3. Ask at conversion. How did you hear about us, with AI assistants as an option, the only reliable way to capture the AI layer.
  4. Protect what you collect. First-party data is an asset with GDPR duties attached: lawful basis, retention, and processor agreements.

Why it compounds

First-party data compounds in two directions: better measurement feeds better decisions, and a growing owned list reduces dependence on rented platforms, the lesson from our TikTok post. The businesses rebuilding around their own data now are building the only marketing asset that cannot be switched off by a platform update.
