ChatGPT Search vs Google in Ireland: What We're Seeing

Part of our AI share of voice monitoring is running the same Irish business queries through both Google and AI assistants every month and comparing the results. After doing this across many categories, a few patterns have become consistent enough to share, no fabricated percentages, just what the side-by-side looks like.

The answers are different things

Google returns a list of pages. ChatGPT returns an answer with citations. For a query like best accountant in Galway, Google shows a map pack and ten blue links; ChatGPT names a few firms with reasons and sources. The same question produces a ranked list in one place and a recommendation in the other.

The winners are rarely identical

A business ranking first on Google is not automatically cited by ChatGPT, and a business cited by ChatGPT is sometimes nowhere near the top of Google. The engines weight different things: Google weights links and domain history; the assistants weight quotability, structure, and source trust. We covered the mechanics in what is GEO.

Where they overlap

The businesses that do well in both share the same foundation: answer-first content, structured data, consistent entity details, and real reviews. That overlap is the useful insight: you do not need two strategies, you need one strategy built on the shared fundamentals and measured separately in each place.

Where Google still dominates

For navigational queries, maps, opening hours, and commercial comparison shopping with high intent, Google remains where Irish users start. For research questions, comparisons, and how do I decide questions, the assistants keep taking share, which is the shift Gartner predicted in 2024 and Alphabet’s October 2026 share fall confirmed. The practical playbook

Build pages that answer questions, structure them for machines, keep entities consistent, and measure both surfaces monthly with AI share of voice. The brands doing this are winning both the list and the answer, and the gap they are opening is the one we keep seeing widen.
